Labelcoin Expands Team Hot Off SXSW Launch Success

A robust team joins co-founders Mark Miller and Chad Petterson following the launch of Labelcoin at SXSW in March 2023.

Team Labelcoin is launching their Business Advisory Council, a network of highly experienced executives from multiple related industries who are excited about this merger of finance and fandom centered around the needs of artists. Labelcoin is an investment marketplace striving to end artist poverty with fan-supported investment in artists’ songs.

The Business Advisory Council will join a strong and growing team of leaders and advisors at Labelcoin. Besides its experienced and passionate management team, Labelcoin has added Advisory Board members Ari Herstand (“the poster child of independent music”) and John Platillero (founder and former CEO of EventBooking.com) and has built a 5-member Artist Advisory Council consisting of Jonah Baker, Kirsten Collins, Megan Davies, Melinda Doolittle and King Topher.

While members of the Artist Advisory Council give perspective on challenges faced by artists and help create new features and functionality for the app, Business Advisory Council members will bring a diversity of experiences and perspectives to help guide Labelcoin in its strategic planning, decision-making and relationship development.

Labelcoin envisions this council will consist of approximately 10 business leaders from a range of relevant industries, including venture capital, trading, mutual fund management, Web3 technology as well as other entertainment-related areas such as television and film. It will also include executives from the music industry to complement the artists on the Artist Advisory Council.

Thus far, the Council consists of Mark Dvornik (former Head of U.S. Distribution at Paramount Pictures), Bob Farnsworth (a Nashville-based music industry veteran and Founder and President of Hummingbird Productions), Lee Guzofski (Founder and CEO of G2G Enterprises) and Loren Johnson (CEO of MRSV Media).

Mr. Dvornik brings TV and film experience from his time overseeing domestic distribution of Paramount Pictures’ $4 billion catalog and from his many years of running television and film studios. Mr. Farnsworth brings 47 years of experience navigating the ever-changing landscape of the music business. He has created some of the world’s most memorable marketing campaigns — from the “Bud Frogs” Super Bowl commercial to unforgettable classics such as “I Wish I Were an Oscar Meyer Weiner” and “Always CocaCola” — with music and creativity being the common thread and central theme to his success. Mr. Guzofski brings perspective from the NYC finance scene and Web3/Web4 as a builder of virtual worlds through augmented reality. Mr. Johnson is a seasoned music industry professional, with experience in branding, production, distribution and artist services. He has served as a producer and/or consultant for GRAMMY Award winning producers and artists as well as INC 50 entrepreneurs. Additional members of the Business Advisory Council will be announced in the coming weeks.

“We are so proud of the support coming from this council,” says Labelcoin CEO Mark Miller. “These executives have proven themselves as initiators of growth and success. Their combined experience will be a great asset to the Labelcoin team.”

“I see great potential for artist development with Labelcoin and am excited by the prospect of advising this team and what this will mean for artists,” says board member Bob Farnsworth. “Beyond bringing experience in music and finance, the Labelcoin team brings passion and heart to an industry so in need. That speaks for itself.”

Artists sell portions of their digital streaming royalties on the Labelcoin Song Exchange, an open stock marketplace where artists have complete control over their royalty rights and decisions about their music. Labelcoin was founded by Mark Miller, previously a touring musician himself, and Chad Petterson, a former Wall Street investment banker and founder of Nashville's music charity HOPE-20.

Over 250 artists, with over 52 million followers and over 2.2 billion streams, have been waiting to get their songs onto the platform.

Labelcoin strives to end artist poverty with a new artist-centric music investment app that fuses Web3, securities law, and Wall Street-like trading.

NASHVILLE – Labelcoin is gearing up for their app launch, ready to address a centuries-old problem: how can hard-working musicians earn a living from their music? With the launch of their new app and song investment platform, Labelcoin will help thousands of musicians quit their second jobs and create consistent income streams without giving up control of their masters.

The majority of artists supporting themselves through music don’t have a sustainable and consistent flow of funds each month. They likely have a big check, from a tour or an advance, and then they don’t see new funds for months. Thousands more artists are only earning enough to pay their producers, leaving them to pick up second jobs or delivery gigs to pay essential bills and delay their dreams. Through Labelcoin, artists bring years of future income forward, with fan-supported investment in their songs. Artists can sell portions of the streaming royalties of their songs, called Notes, and fans start earning regular dividends from future streams.

When artists place their songs on Labelcoin, they retain full control and legal rights over their music and career, and unlike current music catalog sales, artists continue to earn revenue every time their Notes are traded in the future.

Fans can invest in artists they already love, or new music they discover through the Labelcoin platform. As Songholders, they earn streaming royalties alongside the artist, and can help that revenue grow by sharing the songs with their friends and network.

Labelcoin is backed by a passionate team of artists and investment professionals who understand the financial struggles that artists face. “I’ve been there,” says CEO and Co-founder, Mark Miller. “I once spent an entire summer making hand-made ceramic mugs to fulfill Kickstarter orders. I found odd jobs filing medical records and worked as an audio engineer part time, then I would go out for a week at a time playing shows and hope to break even. It was eight years into my career before we actually had a positive income we could live on solely from music. That’s why Labelcoin is needed. We’re creating a pathway for artists to make a living now, not eight years down the road if they can just hang on.”

Labelcoin’s product is rooted in its co-founders' genuine drive to help artists in need of a reliable income before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Co-founder Mark Miller toured for a decade, the last five years of which were spent with his wife as indie pop duo, So Long Solo. After building a six-figure annual income as an artist, he left the road to help other artists succeed, founding Brave Enough Entertainment in 2016. “We signed a lot of artists off of shows like The Voice and American Idol - artists with huge potential and way more talent and followers than [So Long Solo]. I was shocked to discover that we were out-earning nearly all of them with our small base of 3,000 followers, and so I threw myself into figuring out how to help these artists use everything we learned - set that as their new floor - and smash their previous ceiling.” Brave Enough Entertainment won the Association For The Promotion Of Campus Activities’ Agency of the Year award in 2019.

“Once COVID hit, we quickly realized a big change was needed for our artists, and the industry as a whole,” adds Miller. Miller met former Wall Street investment pro and VC investor Chad Petterson, who had also seen challenges arise for artists during the COVID pandemic. Petterson started a charity in Nashville called HOPE-20 as a result. HOPE-20, now called HOPE FORWARD, has helped musicians and entertainment professionals affected during and after the pandemic. To date, HOPE FORWARD has paid $150,000 of housing and utility bills, supplied over 10,000 pounds of groceries and fresh produce, provided over 100 live and online courses and given mental, emotional and spiritual support to struggling artists and entertainment professionals.

As venues opened back up, Miller and Petterson looked for new ways to support artists, one of these being Labelcoin, which channeled each of their strengths and similar passions to reduce artist poverty. They are deeply committed to the middle class artist’s journey, having compiled additional materials and resources to aid artist growth and visibility in music, including marketing and networking tools to help artists amplify their songs on the platform.

“Labelcoin is a great place for artists and fans who may not be familiar with investing, Web3, or even trends in the music industry,” says Chad Petterson. “We make it super easy for anyone to support these growing artists and invest in their success.” To accomplish this, Labelcoin has created a marketplace where investors can easily track individual song and overall portfolio profitability as well as numerous other performance and financial metrics.

Artists trust Labelcoin for its team’s continued dedication to helping artists, keeping the artists’ best interests at its core. Because of this, Labelcoin has had an overwhelmingly positive response in signing up artists for its platform. Over 250 artists, with over 52 million followers and over 2.2 billion streams, have been waiting to get their songs onto the platform. Artists include Megan Davies, Jonah Baker, Kirsten Collins, Ari Herstand, and many more. These songs will be available for investment post-launch.

This launch aligns with the SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas from March 13th-18th. Labelcoin will be hosting numerous events during the festival. To view a list of Labelcoin events, please visit www.labelcoin.io.

Artists can make consistent, sustainable income by selling portions of their streaming royalties to retail investors with Labelcoin, a new app launching in March 2023 at the SXSW Conference in Austin, TX.

NASHVILLE – Nashville-founded Labelcoin helps music fans support their favorite music through investment, or discover and invest in the next big song by an up-and-coming artist. Labelcoin is a transparent, secure marketplace for the exchange of digital royalties, called Notes – built on a slew of data to help fans understand their investment, and artists understand their market.

“The music industry is lacking transparency,” says Labelcoin CEO & Co-founder Mark Miller. “With our platform, investors can immediately see royalties coming in and total earnings from all their investments, taking the heavy lifting off of the backs of artists and labels. They can track royalty payouts and microtransactions with little effort.”

Miller knows the importance of this firsthand from his years as an artist, producer, and engineer, as well as Founder and President of Brave Enough Entertainment, a booking and talent agency based out of Nashville, TN. He and his wife created indie/pop duo So Long Solo, and found themselves always on the road, as touring was their main source of revenue. They learned what the journey is like for an artist, how artists have to be good at management, sales, accounting, and marketing, in addition to their music. They also learned just how expensive and time consuming it is to make a living on the road.

All this led Miller to found Labelcoin with co-founder Chad Petterson in 2021. Petterson is a former Wall Street investment banker, venture capital investor, passionate music supporter, and founder of Nashville's music charity HOPE-20.

“We're helping artists bring the next 10+ years of income forward to today to create a sustainable income, and giving them new ways to get their fans engaged,” adds Miller. “Labelcoin as a whole is a great bridge for people not familiar with crypto as people won't even recognize that they're interacting with Blockchain technology. We make it that simple for anyone to invest in music.”

This is done by selling portions of a song’s streaming royalties, paid by services like Spotify and Apple Music, on Labelcoin’s Song Exchange marketplace, where fans can invest in songs individually, or through Curated Collections (Song Mutual Funds). An artist’s career and income can fluctuate with touring or song popularity, and Labelcoin gives artists the potential to create consistent and sustainable income based not only on a one-time catalogue sale, but with passive residual income as well.

“Labelcoin offers artists a brand new revenue stream directly from their fans,” says Ari Herstand, author of How To Make It in the New Music Business. “Unlike crowdfunding, where fan fatigue is common, this new funding model engages the fan in a meaningful way while allowing them to participate in the success of their favorite songs and artists.”

Labelcoin is creating a paradigm shift in the way artists finance their careers. Instead of asking family members, friends, or fans for a loan or a donation, which can feel like charity, artists can ask for an investment, with hope for a positive return for both the artist and investor. There’s a different feeling associated with asking someone for an investment rather than a handout, with more buy-in and support of the artist.

Labelcoin Song Exchange

The Labelcoin Song Exchange is an open stock marketplace where artists sell their music, and investors can buy and sell portions of digital streaming rights to songs, to become Songholders. Royalties for the rights are received by Labelcoin and distributed immediately to holders through the blockchain, according to their percentage share of a song and length of ownership since the last payout.

  • Artists have complete control over what royalty rights and what percentage of such rights are up for sale, and the price of each Note they’re placing on the Song Exchange.

  • Using a proprietary algorithm, Labelcoin provides an estimate of the value of the song, which constantly updates based on artist popularity, stream counts, and other metrics.

  • Investors buy in at a set Initial Note Offering price; the price then fluctuates based on market forces.

  • Artists receive 97% of the proceeds of the Initial Note Offering.

  • Artists also earn a passive residual income of 40% from every transaction fee that occurs when investors buy or sell their Notes.

Curated Collections (Song Mutual Funds)

Curated Collections are essentially mutual funds for songs, which can be curated by a label, music blogger, music influencer, venue, or any music lover. Curators choose an assortment of songs from the Song Exchange to be part of their collections.

  • This is a great opportunity for investors without specific music industry knowledge to participate in a new asset class.

  • This is also a great option for music fans who don't feel the need to be in control of their investments; instead, they choose someone they trust to do it for them.

  • Investors will likely discover and support new songs and artists outside of their typical listening niche.

  • Investors can sell at any time at market price.

  • Curators receive 5% of royalties.

In all Labelcoin ventures, artists retain full ownership over their career and career choices. Fans earn dividends from their song shares, as a song performs well on streaming or other digital content services, but don’t own any master rights or have any legal control in the artist’s career. Artists can also pull their songs off at any time, for any reason. They can either buy their digital royalties back at market value, or perform a forced buyback at three times the Initial Note Offering Price or current market value (whichever is higher).

“One of the challenging parts of being independent is figuring out how to fund a record, a video, or a tour,” says singer, songwriter, and producer Megan Davies, who joined the Labelcoin Artist Advisory Council last year. “All the time, artists enter into less than favorable contracts with labels in order to have access to funding. There’s still a lot of great reasons to be with a label. And a lot of great reasons to be independent. But Labelcoin makes it easier for an artist to choose what’s best for them and their career moving forward.”

Megan Davies joins other founding artists who will make select songs investable on Labelcoin at launch.

Fans come for the artists they know, and stay to discover more songs. Despite having “coin” in its name and being built on blockchain technology, Labelcoin is a great bridge for people not familiar with crypto or web3. All values will appear in the user’s own native currency, with normal payment methods.

Every song is registered with the SEC (under Reg A+), and is compliant with all regulations and current laws.
